Do you need a uniform, coat or other clothing for your child? The uniform and coat gift package is available for families in need or families experiencing difficult times.  Please contact your child's school counselor who will send us the request.  Due to the enormous demand for this gift, we can only accept requests from school counselors and principals.  We are not able to help every family but will do everything we can to help those in most need.  We appreciate your understanding.

Help us provide uniforms and coats to Akron area children. Each clothing order costs us about $50. We include: 2 uniform pants, 2 shirts and a sweater, 3 undershirts, 3 pr of socks and underwear, a coat, hat, and gloves. Please help us provide uniforms and coats to Akron's children in need. Click on the donate button or send your donation to P.O. Box 13411, Akron, O 44334-8811 Any questions?  Use the contact button above.

Please help us Clothe-A-Child:  We are blessed to live in a community that cares for our children.  We invite businesses, community organizations, churches and schools to partner with us as we work to provide newborn layettes and uniforms, coats and clothing for our area children in need.  You can help our children by sponsoring a Clothe-A-Child Day or event.  Scroll across the menu above to 'Support Us' and then click 'Clothe-A-Child' for more information.

Member update:  Since school started, we have packed over 1,500 clothing and coat orders.  Come help us count and celebrate another year of providing uniforms, coats and clothing to Akron area children in need.   Check back here every Thursday for updates and packing times.  Contact Wendy Burgoyne if you can deliver a few orders this week.

Many thanks to the many "early birds" who are helping us pack this year.

Hope to see all our members at May Salad Supper on Wed. May 16th at 6PM.  Bring a salad to share.  This is our final General Membership Meeting of the year.  Join us as we induct our new officers and enjoy dinner with our friends.

We welcome all friends, family and interested volunteers to join us on our packing days.  Student volunteers are welcome when accompanied by an adult.  Use the "contact" button above for additional information.

Who We Are

Founded by Mary Virginia Merrick in Washington, D.C. in 1887, the Christ Child Society is devoted to promoting the welfare of all children. For more than 125 years, the non-profit, all-volunteer organization has fed, clothed, housed, and educated tens of thousands of youngsters in the various communities where each of its more than 40 chapters are chartered.

The Christ Child Society of Akron, a chapter of the National Christ Child Society, was founded in 1957.  It operates without a paid administrative staff and all funds donated, remain in Akron to directly benefit the children in our community.

The Christ Child Society welcomes members of all religious denominations. Through service that affirms the dignity of all God's children, members enrich life for the most vulnerable among us while also enjoying the blessings of lifelong friendships that flourish in shared service.

Our motto, Laborare est orare, translates from the Latin: "To work is to pray." In honoring that conviction, the Christ Child Society works with a host of organizations throughout the Greater Akron area, offering service and support to children in need.

What we do

For 54 years, the Christ Child Society of Akron has provided services and clothing to Akron area children in need.

We are grateful to you, our members, friends, donors and Foundations, who have supported us through the years.

Because of your generosity, we have been able to help make the Akron area a better place for children.  In 2010-2011, you helped us provide the following to children in need:

  • 1,471 children received new clothing, including uniform pants, shirts, sweaters, coats, hats, gloves, socks, and underwear.  Started in 1970, the Clothing Center has grown to become our major service project.  The Akron Public Schools presented us a Volunteer Recognition Award and a commendation from Summit County Council for our service.

  • 330 newborns received layettes, which included infant clothing, socks, diapers, bottles, wipes, blankets and more.  We have worked with the hospitals and area agencies since 1957, providing  these wonderful gifts for babies.

  • 625 Friendship Bags, with toiletries, were distributed to children who had to be removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect, enabling them to pack their clothing and belongings.  This is the eighth year that we have supported Summit County Children Services Board, providing the bags to help these children in crisis.

  • We continued to provide emergency clothing to children.

  • 38 Infant Bereavement Kits were delivered to the hospitals to be distributed to families who lost a new baby.
