The First Glance Teen Moms/Young Moms is the newest service project of our chapter.  The program was started by Karen Freeman, the director of the program at First Glance, a youth center in the Kenmore area of Akron, in order to help teen moms and young moms learn not only how to care for their children, but how to cook, sew, manage their finances, and learn basic life skills.  The moms meet once a week, have dinner together, and participate in programs designed for them.

After attending a city-wide conference on teen pregnancy and hearing a presentation by Karen Freeman, Christ Child members Linda Hart and Sara Guerrero-Duby were convinced that the Christ Child Society should do something to help reduce teen pregnancies and mentor teens who were already moms.  Linda and Sara presented the idea to the Christ Child Board and to the General Membership, and initiated our involvement with the moms in October 2011.  Twenty Christ Child members became involved in helping with this project.

In the first year of involvement, Christ Child members presented six programs for the Teen Moms/Young Moms: we hosted a trip to Walsh Pumpkin Farm and provided dinner at the farm; we sponsored a Llama Llama Red Pajama Party at which the moms made safe-sized polar fleece "lovies" for the kids to sleep with (instead of laying down with a bottle) and we discussed bedtime routines; we distributed books to the moms for World Book Night and our pediatrician, Dr. Sara, answered baby questions; we had a story time/book distribution night that included making a small window hanging bird feeder along with a themed cooking class making birds nest healthy snacks; we planted pots of flowers with the moms; and we hosted a trip to the Akron Zoo, paying admission and providing a picnic lunch for them.

Some of the programs scheduled for this year include: help with Santa bags (gift bags for the children); a cooking fun night that will also include copies of the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" for the kids; help with Easter baskets; a night of nursery rhymes along with copies of a nursery rhymes storybook; and another trip to the Akron Zoo.
